The Mantle of Advanced Glycation End Products in Micro-and Macrovascular Complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
نویسندگان
چکیده
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a multifactorial disorder that occurs because of a complex interplay between genetic predisposition and lifestyle choices as the two primary causative factors. It is characterized by chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, oxidative stress and hyperglycemia. Chronic state of hyperglycemia often results in the formation of Advanced Glycation End products, hereby abbreviated as AGEs via the infamous Maillard reaction. The Maillard reaction is defined as formation of adducts between reactive carbonyls in glucose, fructose, and their metabolites, such as methylglyoxal or deoxyglucosone, with amino groups in protein, DNA, and lipids. This reaction has been implicated as a root cause of several evils in diabetes associated microand macrovascular complications [1].

Advanced Glycation End Products in Diabetes Mellitus: Mechanism of Action and Focused Treatment
Data shows that glucose is not only the main energy source for short periods, but also the major source of diabetes mellitus complications, mainly by forming oxidative and proinflammatory advanced glycation end products (AGE). The preclinical and clinical studies of the last decade demonstrated a strong involvement of AGE in all of the micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes mellitus,...
متن کاملAdvanced glycation end products and diabetic complications: a general overview.
Diabetes mellitus, especially type 2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate reaching epidemic proportions. Although hyperglycemia has been considered as playing an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, the mechanisms involved remain uncertain. There are several theories as to how chronic hyperglycemia can lead to micro or macrovascular disease in diabetes, including ...
متن کاملEffect of Linalool on the Activity of Glyoxalase-I and Diverse Glycation Products in Rats with Type 2 Diabetes
Background and purpose: Hyperglycemia contributes to type 2 diabetes and diabetes vascular complications by reduction of the activity of glyoxalase-I (GLO-I) and elevation of glycation, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers. Linalool is reported to have beneficial effects on glucose metabolism in animal models of diabetes, so, this study aimed at investigating the effect of linalool on the...
متن کاملOxidative stress in type 2 diabetes: the role of fasting and postprandial glycaemia
Oxidative stress, through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), has been proposed as the root cause underlying the development of insulin resistance, beta-cell dysfunction, impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It has also been implicated in the progression of long-term diabetes complications, including microvascular and macrovascular dysfunction. Excess nou...

Background & Aims: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation is increased in diabetes mellitus, leading to microvascular and macrovascular complications. Recently, much attention has been focused on natural and synthetic inhibitors to delay the onset or progression of diabetes and its comorbidities. In this study, an in vitro glycation model containing albumin as a model protein together...
